I manage the grant making department of a medium size community foundation in the Midwest. I write about the relationship between the charitable sector and American democracy, and how this American experiment is playing out from my vantage point as a civic actor in one mid-size city in Ohio. I have concerns about the health of civil society and American-style liberal democracy – and I have some ideas about how we can help them thrive.  My writings cover government, nonprofits, charities, philanthropy, foundations and beyond.  In my professional role, I help philanthropists, donors and others invest in what works, and I often cover that, too.
